📖 Script
In Bangladesh, there have been major protests by garment workers demanding higher wages. The workers are asking for a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 taka, which is more than double the current 12,500 taka. This demand has come because the cost of living, including food, housing, and healthcare, has increased significantly. The garment industry is very important to Bangladesh’s economy, as it employs about 4 million workers and accounts for over 80% of the country’s export earnings.
In response to the protests, Bangladesh’s government has formed a six-member wage board to review the workers’ pay. This decision was made after discussions with workers’ representatives and industry leaders. The Labour and Employment Minister, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, urged the workers to return to work. Despite this, protests have continued across major industrial areas, leading to disruptions in transport and factory operations. Some workers blocked roads and clashed with police, who used tear gas and water cannons to disperse them.
The unrest has already forced the closure of 25 to 30 factories and caused concern about delays in export shipments. The garment industry faces challenges such as rising production costs, gas and electricity shortages, and energy market uncertainties. These issues could affect both manufacturers and workers if the disruptions continue.
